Churchill, Manitoba - Day 4

Monday, July 2nd, 2018

Today dawns equally cold, but Bernadette and I are on a mission: We want to go in search of the elusive polar bears. There have been sightings, but we have not seen one.

I hire a truck and start driving the route that the tour on Friday took me. I even try to give her a running commentary.

We even find the same pair of Arctic Terns still patiently sitting on their nest beside the road. They make no attempt to attack us today.

We follow every road possible but to no avail. The bears remain a mystery. Speaking of roads: Many roads may lead to Rome, but not to Churchill they don't. There is absolutely no road access. You can't skip town.

At the end of one road, we find the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. They have a souvenir shop here where I treat myself to a beautiful calendar for next year.

Another road is called Goose River Road. It follows the Churchill River and ends at a pumping station.  We cross the railway line a couple of times.

Well, we have driven every available road as far as we could and still the bears have been elusive.
That settles it. Churchill, you go right back on the bucket list!

Bernadette shouts me my last dinner at the Lodge and then I sit and wait to be taken to the airport for my rather late flight.

This is a very bad shot as it was taken with my phone through the aircraft window into the sunset. But I just have to show you the clever contraption they use around here to get you on board the plane. It is a proper ramp! No rickety stairs!

Sadly, the rickety stairs are all we get at the end of the flight in Winnipeg where I have to stay a night.
