Churchill, Manitoba - Day 3 - Canada Day

Sunday, July 1st, 2018

Today is Canada Day. All of Churchill is out and about to either be part of the parade or to watch it. I meet up with my new friend Bernadette whom I met on the way here. She is a nurse and is about to start work at the hospital for a year.

We find somewhere to have a coffee - and a piece of cake for my birthday - while we wait to see the parade.  It is quite cold today and a bit windy and overcast. Quite like a Tasmanian winter's day.

When the time comes, we stand out on the terrace where we've just had coffee, ready to watch the parade.

I am quite amazed to see this truck pulling up on the other side of the road and  people setting up the comfortable chairs. This must be a big parade coming.
Well, here it comes.

This float ends up winning the first prize

This float wins a prize too

When the Beluga walks past and nothing else follows, Bernadette asks a man beside her if that was it. She gets told she could run up the road and watch it again. So funny.

Considering the town only has 899 inhabitants, it is quite a feat to have a parade as well as spectators, not to mention still some staff in various places to feed people.

Eventually, we hear on the grapevine that the remaining festivities have been transferred to one of the halls, so that's where we go next and find everybody in the swing of things.

This little choir is called The Fiddle Sticks. They sing O Canada - the national anthem.

The tiniest Mountie

These are the cheerleaders who, together with some other kids, perform some dancing and acrobatics.

This is followed by the handing out prizes for the best floats. The trophies are really serious looking and have obviously been passed around for years.

The mayor of Churchill gives a brief speech and informs us that due to the fairly high wind, bonfires and fireworks would be cancelled for tonight, but assures us that there would be another opportunity soon. They are very flexible around here.

Somebody has gone to great length to produce this wonderful cake which is cut up into little portions.
There is a barbecue going as well elsewhere in the building .

Bernadette goes home and I head back to the Lodge and spend the rest of the afternoon.

At dinner tonight, the waitress asks me could I please wait a little while before ordering any dessert. Then she and the two chefs surprise me with this special creation, singing Happy Birthday.
So that's why one of the waiters rang my room after breakfast to ask me if I liked chocolate.

They call it chocolate lover's cake. It is warm and there is liquid chocolate oozing out of the center.

Happy birthday to me!
