The South Africa Adventure - arriving and catching up with old friends

Thursday, July 26th, 2018

Having arrived in Johannesburg and been put on a much later flight without being told anything and consequently spent hours hanging out at the airport lounge, I finally approach Cape Town three hours later than planned.

I can tell I am arriving in the right place.
Thanks to communication possibilities, I was able to let my friend Therese know about it.

What a moment to come out of the airport and find my schoolmate waiting for me. We hadn't seen each other for 42 years.

We are having a lovely catch up over dinner which her son Marc has cooked for us.
And then we are busy making plans for the next day before I go and settle for the night at

Marc drives into the city, to the harbour for one thing or another and from there, Therese and I continue by ourselves to meet my Rotarian friends Lloyd and Penny at Constantia Nek. From there, we are chauffeured around by Lloyd who, having been born and bred in South Africa, is very knowledgeable. We'd met in Portugal a few years ago on a tour after the Lisbon Convention.

He starts by showing us the beautiful Constantia Valley with all its vineyards. On the way down to Muizenburg, we catch this gorgeous view of False Bay

Lloyd brings us to The Foodbarn Deli & Tapas Bar in Nordhoek to feast on some of their "Lekker Stuff" for lunch.

Leaving the tempting foodie place, we drive along the Ou Kaapse Weg.

There are some fabulous views again, and when we spot a whale watcher in his little hut, we stop in the hope of getting a glimpse of one, but no such luck.

All too soon, we arrive back at Constantia Nek where we have to say goodbye to Lloyd and Penny.

Therese drives down towards Hout Bay and along the Atlantic Route.

These mountains are called the 12 apostles.

We get to see the Lion's Head and the Table Mountain from the back, the latter complete with table cloth.

From there we drive back through the city and on to Brackenfell where Marc whips up another lovely dinner for us.

Then it's back to the guesthouse for me. My first full day in Cape Town.
